Apprenticeships at CAA
At the CAA we are delighted to offer a range of apprenticeships programmes from early career apprenticeships to colleagues who are looking to continue their professional development.
The apprenticeships currently available at the Civil Aviation Authority include: –
Level 3 – Team Leader Apprenticeship
This programme is right for you if you are in a Team Leader role, or aspiring/about to enter this role imminently.
The course is designed for those who manage people within their day-to-day activity and have responsibility for people processes and performance development conversations. You may directly line manage people at the start of this programme, or you may indirectly manage team members by having responsibility for a project or project element which others are required to work on.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Effective Communication; stakeholder management and leadership communication
- Managing Finance and Budgets; finance, reporting and managing resources
- Leading and Motivating a Team; performance coaching and team management
- Solving Problems and Making Decisions; project management and risk management
Entry Criteria:
- GCSE Maths and English grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent
- The team leader/ supervisor apprenticeship is suitable for anyone working in line management roles
Duration: 12-15 months
Level 3 – Digital Business Accelerator Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are looking for a career in business administration, project management, data management and reporting.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Through this module, you will understand the context in which the apprentices’ organisation operates and will consider the importance of their organisation’s vision and values.
- Better understand the problems they are being asked to solve, and what questions they need to ask to set themselves up for success.
- How to build a narrative and be an impactful presenter. You will consider what effective communication looks like within their team and organisation.
Entry Criteria:
- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
Duration: 12-15 months
Level 3 – Learning and Design Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are looking for a career in Training delivery, learning solution design and Talent Development.
During this programme, you will learn about
- How to support the identification of learning and training needs analysis.
- Coordinating and delivery of training courses in line with the training portfolio.
- Reviewing, analysis, evaluation and providing recommendations for improvements for training to ensure best practice.
- Assisting in the coordination, production and implementation of marketing and communications campaigns and promotional activities to support training delivery – maximising the impact.

- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
Duration: 12-18 months
Level 3 – Digital Marketer Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are looking for a career in Marketing and Communications
During this programme, you will learn about
- Marketing Promotion – Support on all aspects of promotional marketing mix including, but not limited to, advertising, media planning, digital, print, email, public relations, e-commerce, social media, search engine marketing, events, direct marketing, and sales promotions.
- Content creation – Collaborating with technical experts from across the organisation; research, coordinate and produce well-structured thought-leadership copy/content about technical, industry-related topics.
- Marketing Communications – Plan, produce and disseminate marketing content and assets across a range of owned and paid media channels including, website, email, events, social media, paid search, and sponsorships.
- Marketing Collateral – Develop marketing creatives and materials – often working with and briefing third-party agencies and other internal departments.
- Campaigns – Working with product teams across the business, plan and coordinate small to medium sized marketing campaigns and activities to support new/existing products and services for demand and lead generation.
Entry Criteria:
- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
Duration: 15-18 months
Level 3 – Data Technician Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are working in a Data Administrator, Junior Analyst role or a Data driven role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- The Importance and Value of Data to an Organisation
- Data Types and Data Architecture
- Data Structures and Algorithms
- Sourcing, Extracting and Preparing Data
- Access and Extracting Data from Multiple Sources
- Communication Methods
- Creating Reports, Analytical Insights and Extracting Value from your Data, storytelling and presenting with data
- Performing Deeper Analysis
- Commercial fundamentals

Level 3 – Customer Service Specialist Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are working in a customer focused role, looking to develop your skills and be the expert in customer service requests, complaints, and queries.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Business knowledge and understanding; continuous improvement, the impact your service provision has on the wider organisation.
- Customer journey: understand and evaluate possible journeys of your customers, reasons why customer issues and complex situations sometimes need referral for specialist attention, underpinning business processes that support you in bringing the best outcome for your customer and organisation.
- Knowing your customers and their needs; know your internal and external customers and how their behaviour may require different approaches, how to analyse, use and present a range of information to provide customer insight.
- Customer service culture and environment awareness; keep current knowledge and understanding of regulatory considerations, drivers and impacts in relation to customer delivery, business environment and culture, organisation structure and what role each department needs to play in delivering customer service.
Entry Criteria:
- GCSE Maths and English grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent
- It is essential that you can demonstrate the learning in your day-to-day role to achieve the qualification / pass the assessment at the end.
Duration: 15-18 months
Level 3 – Software Development Technician Apprenticeship
This Apprenticeship is ideal for those working in a junior application, test, or support developer role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Fundamentals of all stages of the software development life cycle including development, Quality assurance, user acceptance testing and release.
- Project life cycle, different communication methods, principles of effective teamwork to produce software, and software design.
- Fundamentals of computing systems, principles and uses of relational and non-relational databases, principles of software testing frameworks.
- Principles of pattern recognition, breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller parts, emerging technology trends and innovations
- Software project planning, processes and protocols used, key principles of testing components, digital tools.
- Importance of industry standards and where to find them.
Entry Criteria:
- GCSE Maths and English grade C / Grade 4 or equivalent

Duration: 18-21 months
Level 4 – Software Developer Apprenticeship
This Apprenticeship is ideal for you if you are working in an Application, Software or web developer role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- All stages of the software development lifecycle and Project lifecycle.
- Communication methods, how teams work effectively to produce software, organisational policies and procedures
- Differences between software development methodologies such as agile and waterfall
- Software design approaches and patterns to identify reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems
- Algorithms, logic and data structures relevant to software development
- Principles and uses of relational and non-relational databases, software designs and functional or technical specifications
- Software testing and frameworks
Entry Criteria:
- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
- It is essential that you can demonstrate the learning in your day-to-day role to achieve the qualification / pass the assessment at the end.
Duration: 24- 27 months
Level 4 – Data Analyst Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are working in a Data, Junior, Marketing or Departmental Analyst Role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Current relevant legislation and its application to the safe use of data, organisational data and information security standards policies and procedures
- Data lifecycle and steps involved in carrying out routine data analysis tasks, principles of data including open and public data, differences between structured and unstructured data
- Data structures, Database system design, implementation and maintenance, principles of user experience
- Approaches to combining data from different sources, organisational tools and methods for data analysis
- Organisational data architecture
- Principles of statistics for analysing datasets, principles of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics.

- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)

Level 4 – Intelligence Analyst Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are working in an Intelligence Analyst, Officer or Researcher role, or Security Analyst, Security Manager role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Legal and organisationally appropriate intelligence collection and storage methods, together with their limitations.
- The implications for loss of sensitive material, remaining alert to the methods required to protect against physical and cyber security risks and what procedures to follow
- Processes around collation and evaluation of relevant sources of information for use within intelligence products, relevant intelligence sources that are commonly used
- Intelligence cycle, and all processes involved
- The main factors influencing organisational/client environments, the benefit of generating or using intelligence combined from several sources as opposed to a single source
- How to use analytical development techniques to identify and produce key findings and judgments in assessments, carry out data analysis from a numerical or factual perspective and identify intelligence gaps and identify a range of relevant and credible information sources and recognise the need to collect new data, when necessary from sources.

Level 4 – Regulatory Compliance Officer Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are looking for a career in auditing, regulation, or compliance.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Supporting multi-channel product marketing campaigns including social media, email marketing and copywriting.
- Website administration to include creating and update marketing content and imaging
- Opportunity and lead generation
- Content management and marketing administration
Entry Criteria:
- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
- It is essential that you can demonstrate the learning in your day-to-day role to achieve the qualification / pass the assessment at the end.
Duration: 15-18 months
Level 5 – Operations Manager Apprenticeship
This programme is right for you if you are stepping up from line managing a person, to managing a team. The course is designed for those who manage people or projects and are ultimately accountable to a more Senior Manager or Business Owner.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Delivering Operational Excellence: Achieving excellent results through others and planning capability
- Leading through Innovation and Change: Change communications and encouraging fresh ideas to improve results
- Managing and Developing Business Relationships; Networking for success, stakeholder management and negotiation
- Managing Finance and Budgets: Operational budget controls, disseminated budget management and departmental reporting
Entry Criteria:
- You must be in a suitable role to take part in this programme or be stepping into a relevant role imminently.
- Maths and English Grade 9-4 or equivalent
Duration: 24 months
Level 6 – Data Scientist Apprenticeship
This is an ideal apprenticeship if you are working in a Data Scientist, Informatics or Data Engineer role.
During this programme, you will learn about
- The context of Data Science and the Data Science community in relation to computer science, statistics and software engineering.
- How data and analysis may exhibit biases and prejudice. How ethics and compliance affect Data Science work, and the impact of international regulations (including the General Data Protection Regulation.
- How data can be used systematically, through an awareness of key platforms for data and analysis in an organisation.
- How to design, implement and optimise analytical algorithms, Statistical and mathematical models and methods, Development standards, including programming practice, testing, source control.
- The data landscape: how to critically analyse, interpret and evaluate complex information from diverse datasets
Entry Criteria:
- 5 GCSE’s A-C / 9-4 or equivalent (must include Maths and English)
- 2 years of higher education (A Levels, Technical or equivalent)
- 1 STEM subject
- It is essential that you can demonstrate the learning in your day-to-day role to achieve the qualification / pass the assessment at the end.
Duration: 36-39 months
Level 7 – MSc Aviation Safety Management, Risk and Regulation
In partnership with Cranfield University, this is an ideal postgraduate course available as an apprenticeship for professionals working in aerospace and commercial air transport industries.
It provides a globally unique offering that relates to the regulatory background of all aspects of aviation safety, including design, production, operations, and maintenance.
During this programme, you will learn about
- Provide a globally unique offering to meet the needs of safety professionals in the industry and the regulator, offering the opportunity to engage with real safety problems of today and future challenges.
- Promote excellence in risk and safety management via Masters level course that forms part of a high technology mastership programme in safety, risk and regulation.
- Promote safety management and performance-based regulatory practice within UK and globally
Entry Criteria:
– Prior UG degree @ 2:2 or above (or equivalent)
– 3rd degree + 3 years’ experience
– No degree but relevant lower qualification or licence + 7 years’ experience
Duration: 3 Years (part-time)
