What is Cyber Security?
Cyber security is how individuals and organisations reduce the risk of cyber-attack.
The purpose of cyber security is to protect the electronic devices we all use (such as smartphones, laptops and servers), and the services we access online from theft or damage. It’s also about preventing unauthorised access to the vast amounts of information we store on these devices, and online.
Cyber security is important because smartphones, computers and the internet are now such a fundamental part of modern life, that it causes severe disruption without them. From online banking and flight scheduling, to email and instant messaging, it’s more important than ever to take steps that can prevent cyber criminals getting hold of our accounts, data, and devices.
Cyber Security is primarily designed to protect 3 areas, which are:
Confidentiality
preventing unauthorised access to personal information or company data.
Integrity
safeguarding accuracy and preventing alteration of data.
Availability
ensure access to data and services when required by users.

What is the CAA’s role in cyber?
The mission of the CAA cyber team is to ensure UK aerospace takes an effective approach in the management of cyber security risks to continuously improve safety, security and resilience.
As the UK’s aviation system is a vital part of its connectivity, both domestically and internationally, we must ensure that we maintain the highest levels of safety and security to protect against evolving threats.
A successful attack could result in a range of serious outcomes, which at worst could lead to the closure of UK airspace.
Why is cyber security needed?
Innovation and new technology provide both opportunities for improvement, but also present a complex set of challenges which require careful and detailed risk assessment.
The aviation industry’s progressively interconnected systems mean that technology is now widespread, leaving them open to vulnerabilities which can be exploited by attackers.
How can you be involved?
There are many areas in cyber security, from ethical hacking to threat intelligence and network security architects. Each area normally has specialised training, but after experience working in the industry you could have the ultimate job you have been dreaming about!
