Science Museum Technician’s Gallery Takeover 2025 in Collaboration with National Grid

24 February 2025

From 18th – 21st February, the CAA STEM team took part in the Science Museum, Technicians Gallery Take-Over, a four-day event running from 18 – 21 February 2025, designed primarily for 11–16-year-olds. However, with it being half-term, the event saw many families attending, with parents and guardians getting just as involved as the children.

For this event, we collaborated with the National Grid’s STEM volunteers and aviation team to deliver interactive aviation and substation-themed activities. This partnership allowed visitors to explore the connections between the aviation industry and other sectors while aligning with our shared STEM objectives—to inspire the next generation.

The CAA team ran a variety of hands-on activities, including:

  • Dangerous Goods Pyramid Game – A challenge where participants strategically load an aircraft, ensuring hazardous materials are placed correctly.
  • Harry Potter Hazardous Symbol Match – A fun, National Grid-led game testing visitors’ knowledge of everyday hazards.
  • My First Flight Computer – A flight-planning activity where participants navigate from one airfield to another, avoiding obstacles.
  • Paper Plane Hoops Challenge – Visitors designed and tested paper planes, aiming to fly them through three progressively smaller hoops.
  • VR Aviation Experience – Making its debut, this immersive experience guided visitors through an air traffic control tower, a hangar with an interactive engine, a cabin crew demonstration, and finally, the cockpit, where they took on the role of a co-pilot preparing for takeoff.

Over the four days, 27 CAA colleagues supported the event, engaging with approximately 10,000 visitors who passed through the Technician’s Gallery. Our team showcased a range of aviation careers, inspiring young minds and highlighting the diverse opportunities within the industry.

A huge thank you to all colleagues who contributed to making this event a success!
