Celebrating Five years of STEM at the CAA

11 June 2025

What began in June 2020 as a virtual response to the pandemic has since evolved into a dynamic, nationwide initiative. Over the past five years, the programme has inspired the next generation in science, technology, engineering, and maths, with a particular focus on aviation and aerospace.

From launching virtual work experience opportunities to developing Aviation Skills Activities for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, we’ve engaged thousands of students in meaningful, real-world learning. Our dedicated STEM website and strong industry partnerships have been key to this success.

But most importantly, at the heart of this programme are our people.

The incredible dedication of over 230 STEM volunteers from across our organisation. Colleagues who generously give their time, energy, and expertise to inspire the next generation. Whether speaking at schools, leading online sessions, or mentoring future STEM stars, each of you plays a vital role in the programme’s success and we simply could not have achieved this without you!

Brenda Jefcoate, CAA STEM Lead commented:

Reaching the five-year milestone of the CAA STEM programme is a proud moment for me and a testament to the passion, innovation, and commitment of everyone involved. Over the years, we’ve empowered thousands of young minds with the knowledge and inspiration to explore careers in aviation and aerospace. Watching students grow in confidence, curiosity, and ambition has been the true measure of our success, and I’m excited to see how we’ll continue to shape the future of this industry.

So, what’s next for STEM? Looking ahead, with support from the Department for Transport and our partners, the future of STEM at CAA looks bright.

We’re excited to explore:

  • Dive into emerging technologies like AI in aviation and electric aircraft
  • Expand virtual and in-person opportunities to connect with even more young people
  • Inspire the next generation through sustainable aviation education
  • Champion diversity and empower underrepresented communities
  • Strengthen our industry partnerships to offer pathways into aviation careers

As we celebrate this five year milestone, we’d like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years and invite you to help shape what comes next. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or would like to become a STEM volunteer, please reach out to Brenda.Jefcoate@caa.co.uk Let’s keep inspiring the future of aviation, together.
