Brief Description

Day in the Life
Plan and conduct audits and inspections to provide regulatory oversight of allocated ANSPs in accordance with the requirements of UK legislation. Contribute to the Performance Based Oversight process as Technical Specialist to ensure intelligence on industry performance in order to support with regulatory oversight on the basis of safety performance. Assess competence of licensed operational staff at allocated units for the renewal or revalidation of ATS licenses, ratings and associated endorsements. Co-operate with other functional areas of AAA or SARG to achieve optimum safety regulation.
Assist when required in the incident investigation process by participating as a member of an investigations team.
Working collaboratively with others to achieve the goals of AAA by achieving performance objectives agreed with the Principal Inspector ATM.

Fun Fact
Air Traffic Controllers don’t have to physically ‘see’ an aircraft either visually or via radar to control it – Procedural control is controlling, applying separation, based on pilot or aircraft reported positions, levels and times.

There are 2 EnRoute Area Control Centres in the UK – one at Swanwick near Southampton and the other at Prestwick in south west Scotland.
Prestwick Centre controls the largest volume of airspace in Europe and includes controlling aircraft halfway across the North Atlantic Ocean.

Inspector ATS Training doesn’t oversee training at the ATC Units themselves – they are responsible for the oversight of the ATC Colleges – this may be where a student ATCO meets the CAA for the first time.

Day in the Life
Assessing and approving permanent and temporary RCS applications, AGCS applications against the requirements of Article 205 and 206 of the Air Navigation Order 2016. Assessing referral queries from SSC ATS Licensing and FS Policy for A/G ROCC (Radio Operator Certificates of Competence) and issuing ROCC examiner authorissation letters. Inspecting and auditing ANSPs and ITOs and ensure they establish a suitable Corrective Action Plan to address non-compliances. Undertake suitable follow-up action to establish progress towards completion of any activities identified within a Corrective Action Plan. Escalate risks to the Principal Inspector ATM as required.

Fun Fact
An Inspecting Officer can travel far and wide – one week you may be at an Air Ground airfield in the north of Scotland and the next week – on the auditing team inspecting an ANSP at a large Airport in the middle of England.

Pursue investigations in liaison with the requesting authority. The job involves assessing Class 1/2/3/LAPL applicants against regulatory aeromedical standards set out in UK Part.MED and UK Part.ATCO.MED. Put simply, we assure that pilots and ATCOs have no medical conditions which would be unsafe when attempting to fly or control air traffic.

Key Skills
Data analysis skills, communicating with pilots and other clinicians, an appreciation for how physiology alters at altitude and how incapacitation may occur with an ability to quantify it in terms of a per annum percentage.

Entry Routes
6 years of medical school, followed by 2 years of foundation training, 3 years of GP training, thereafter significant experience in aviation medicine (with the Diploma in Aviation Medicine) and having worked as an AME to complete a minimum of 200 medicals.

A day in the life
Usually involves a mixture of casework assessments and meetings. We also work in aviation health, derive new guidance material and have oversight functions of AMEs. The work can be very varied but generally involves a lot of time spent reading reports and formulating risk assessments.

Increase Air Safety and reduce the risk of mid air collision. The UKAB is the UK national body that evaluates all instances of aircraft getting too close together in UK Airspace. We take reports from all sectors of the aviation community, either through the mandatory or various voluntary reporting systems and we try to work out what happened. Once we gathered information and investigations from ATC, pilots, the military, we compile a report which is a comprehensive and objective summary of the incident as a whole. We then discuss this at the Board and determine the risk of collision and establish is there are any lessons that can be taken from the occurrence that will help others in their aviation activities.
